Mk2
Mk2 Scirocco White Cat
The Scirocco White Cat of 1985 was somewhere between a GT and a Scala. It came in Alpine white (L90E) with colour coded body kit, bumpers and mirrors. The wheels were standard GT steel rims but painted Alpine white instead is silver. The tailgate spoiler is the smaller early type.
Mk2 Scirocco TR
VW built a prototype Mk2 Scirocco with a removable T-roof. The Scirocco TR, as it was called, never went into production and this sole example of the model now resides in the VW museum in Wolfsburg.
The single wiper gives the Scirocco TR away as an early model. The car is painted in a gold metallic pearl effect colour.
Note the TR logo on the B-pillar.
On the tailgate, the Scirocco TR is badged as a GLI. It has the 1.6 litre injection engine producing 110 bhp.
Detail of the T-roof and roll bar.
Unlike on production Sciroccos, it appears that the windscreen is bonded to the body work. I assume this is to add rigidity.
The two removable sections can clearly be seen in this shot. Note also that the rain gutter is different to production Sciroccos.
Special seat trim for the Scirocco TR seats.
Rare photos of the TR with the roof removed. As this car was a design study, the wheels were painted silver on one side of the car and body colour on the other to assess which looked best. It’s a big win for silver in my view.

Mk2 Scirocco CL
The Scirocco CL was the entry level model of the Mk2 range upon it’s introduction. It was of course a non-bodykit model with the small tailgate spoiler. There was no black covering on the B-pillar nor a model designation badge. 13″ steel wheels were standard.
The first CL came without side moldings but later models had the same moldings as the GL and GTL. The exterior mirrors did not have the internal adjusters and all windows used un-tinted glass.
CL engine options for mainland Europe were the 1.3 (60bhp), 1.5 (70bhp) and 1.6 (85bhp). For the UK the CL had the 1.5 from ’81>’83 and then the 1.6 until it was replaced by the GT in ’85. The CL had a 4 speed gearbox apart from the 1.6 which had a 4+E that was combined with a consumption indicator on the dash.
The CL had single headlights with blanking grills replacing the inner lamps. Like all early Mk2s, it had a single wiper. The ’83> CL had dual wipers.
The CL had the small rear spoiler with no black trim around the tailgate glass.
The CL had ‘comfort’ seats covered with diagonal stripe cloth. This colour is gazelle.

Mk2 Scirocco GTI
When first launched the MK2 Scirocco GTI had the 1.6 injection engine. Later models would get the 1.8 injection. When the MK2 Scirocco saw the light of day in 1981, the GTI was the top of the range. Although the rear badge reads GTI, the B-pillar badge reads GT.
Nine spoke 13″ alloy wheels were fitted and there are no side rubbing strips as this is a pre-bodykit model. The GTI also had the North American style twin headlights, the only other European Sciroccos to have these was the first Bi-motor prototype and German GT. Late GTI models would get Euro lights. This was also the first Mk2 to have the red pinstripe on the grille. Early GTI Sciroccos also had a two piece formed parcel shelf. The GTI had a single front wiper.
North American style headlights and single wiper.
A striking interior ‘Mittelstreifen’ (centre stripe?) trim was used on the GTI which varied depending on body colour.
The GTI had an unusual two piece parcel shelf.
If you ever wondered what this hook was for on the inside of the tailgate, it was used to attach the GTI parcel shelf strings to.

Unfortunately, the girl in the shorts was not an extra cost option for the Scirocco.
The later 1983 1.8 GTI with ‘Euro’ lights. In 1984 the GTI would be fitted with twin wipers.
This ‘Glencheck’ seat trim was used for the ’83> Scirocco GTI.
There was also a Scirocco GT that had the same trim as the GTI but came with the 1.6 carb engine. But this should not be confused with the ’85> GT that was the base model of the Scirocco range.

Mk2 Scirocco GL
The GL was the luxury model of the Scirocco range when introduced in 1981. It featured alloy wheels as standard and had a thin black side molding with a chrome insert. It was the first Mk2 to have full sized twin headlights that would become standard on all later models.
The GL only came with a 1.6 litre carb engine for the UK market. In Germany, there was a choice of 1.3, 1.5 and 1.6 carb engines.
An early single wiper UK spec GL in Cosmos metallic. 8-spoke 13″ alloys, headlight washers and metallic paint were standard kit for the UK model.
Rear view of an ’82 GL Auto in Sand metallic. Like all pre ’84 Sciroccos, it has no bodykit and a small tailgate spoiler. Also note the lack of black trim on the tailgate and B-pillar.

Mk2 Scirocco GT
When the Scirocco line up was re-arranged in 1985, the GT replaced the CL as the entry level model of the range. Initially the GT came without a bodykit but retained the single headlight setup. A 13″ steel wheel previously used on the GTS was standard fitment as were thicker plain black side moldings and black covering on the B-pillars. The GT still had the small tailgate spoiler at this point.

For the 1986 model year, the GT gained the double headlight setup and the Zender bodykit that was first used on the Scirocco Storm. A new style 14″ steel wheel was also fitted. It was powered by the 1.6 carb engine. This would be replaced by the 1.8 carb engine in later models. The Scirocco GT was superceded by the Scirocco GTII.

Mk2 Scirocco GTL
The Scirocco GTL was the luxury model of the range in the mid-eighties rather than being a performance model. This was a non-bodykit model that looked similar to the Scirocco GTI. It had a 1.8 litre carburetor engine giving 90bhp. Nine spoke 13″ alloy wheels were standard.
Mk2 Scirocco GTII
In the U.K. the GT II was the run out Scirocco model. It only came with the basic 1.8l 90 bhp carb engine.
GT IIs for mainland Europe had power steering, slide-tilt sunroof, colour coded bumpers, mirrors and body kit. MFA, rear washer-wiper, electrically adjustable headlights, height adjustable front seats.
Non UK GT IIs were available with 2 types of engine, the 70 kW/95 HP 1.8 8V (JH, with CIS-lambda injection), and the 95kW/129 HP 1.8 16V (PL, CIS-E), which are pretty rare.
The GT II came out in 1989, and was in production along with the Scala.

Mk2 Scirocco GTS
The German GTS of 1983. It was a pre body kit model and had a large GTS decal down each side and colour coded GTS B-pillar logos. 1.6 carb and 1.8 injection engines were available. This was the first Mk2 to have the black B-pillar covering. The Scirocco script is featured on the tailgate glass. Colours available were Mars red, Comet Blue, Diamond silver, Cosmos Metallic and Papyrus Green metallic.
The GTS had the same ‘VOLKSWAGEN’ decal as the Mk2 Scirocco Storm.

The UK GTS of 1985. It had the 90bhp 1.8 carb engine. The body kit is unpainted, and it has single headlights. The tailgate spoiler is the Zender small version. The “S” badge on the rear was also used on the UK Polo Coupe S. Colour choices were Mars red, Alpine white, Black and Capri Blue. A Blaupunkt Hamburg radio was standard. Total price when new was £7194.69.

Mk2 Scirocco GTX
The Scirocco GTX was the range topping Scirocco when launched and replaced the GTI. It had the DX 1.8i engine, 14″ Avus alloy wheels and sports seats, the rear seat was the split folding type. MFA and voltmeter were standard instruments. The first German GTX’s had the Kamei X1 bodykit.
The mid-run GTX models had the Zender bodykit with a smaller Zender tailgate spoiler, later cars would receive the full size one. At this point the black B-pillar covering and GTX emblem were also introduced.
The bodykit would also be painted body colour on the last version, although the bumpers remained black throughout GTX production. 14″ Avus wheels gave way to Pirelli “P” alloys and finally Le Castellet wheels. The GTX was replaced by the Scala 1.8i.
Phase 1
Only the early German GTX’s escaped from Osnabrück with this Kamei X1 bodykit.
The early GTX had decals on the tailgate instead of plastic badges.
