Scirocco S (USA model)

In 1980, the Scirocco S was introduced into the American VW range. Mechanically identical to the 1588cc fuel injected standard American spec Scirocco, the S was basically a ‘cosmetic’ special edition. A 5-speed gearbox was optional. › Continue reading

How to read the VIN sticker
zzz are spacing letters.
53 is the VW type number. eg. Beetle=type 1, Polo=type 86, Scirocco=type 53.
z is another spacing letter.
E is the year of manufacture. eg. 1980=A, 1981=B, 1882=C, 1983=D, 1984=E.
K is the place of manufacture. eg. Wolfsburg=W, Emden=E, Karmann of Osnabruck=K.
012345 is the body number.
Line two has the full type number and sales code.
534 is a RHD Mk2 Scirocco. 531=LHD Mk1, 532=RHD Mk1, 533=LHD Mk2.
C34 is the Storm sales code. This is not used for any other Scirocco. A good way to check if your car is a real Storm.
Line three has the engine and gearbox code.
DX is the 1.8 injection petrol engine. 4Y is the 5 speed manual sports gearbox
Line four has the paint and interior trim codes.
LK5Y is Cosmos blue metallic. 95 is the blue leather interior.
The bottom numbers are the options included. eg. 560 Steel sunroof.
527 Passenger side interior adjustable exterior mirror. 719 Storm extras.
Mk1 Scirocco SL (EU)
The Scirocco SL of 1981 was a special edition run-out model of the Mk1 Scirocco. It was offered in 1.3 litre 60 bhp or 1.6 litre 85 bhp versions. Only Diamond silver and Alpine white paint finishes were offered.
The SL had full length body striping along with a red trimmed grill, VW roundel and tailgate badges. Another period touch were the tyres that had the lettering highlighted in white. Special ‘SL’ logos in an extended serif font were located on the rear quarter panel stripes and below the tailgate lock.
The SL was another special edition Scirocco that was not available here in the UK.
Mk1 Scirocco Storm
First edition Storm. Released in August 1979. This car is finished in Silbergrun (Silver green) metallic, paint code L99N. Power came from the 110 bhp 1.6i engine of the GLI, code EG. Other than the deep Zender spoiler (part No. 531 800 707 B) fitted to the front and the unique colours, there was little externally to distinguish the Storm from other Sciroccos of the era. That said, it was such a good looking car in the first place, why ruin it?
Mk1 Scirocco Champagne Edition (USA)
The 78 Scirocco Champagne and very similar “Sidewinder II” special editions offered to the US on November 11th 1977 were sport packages similar to the “Storm” (UK) or 80 “S” versions but did not use the “S” in the name nor did they have the displacement of the other sport Sciroccos. The Sidewinder II special edition and 78 Champagne followed 1975′s little known › Continue reading
VAG Suspension spring codes
Hopefully the attached three pages will be of use to you, although they do not show the actual spring rates, only the colour codes.
They were taken from the VAG ‘Workshop Manual – Golf, Jetta, Scirocco – Running Gear’, May 1985 Edition which superseded the March 1979 Edition.
A Bulletin at the back states that on the 16v, the front coil springs are shorter and stiffer, and due to this the front of the car is approximately 10mm lower.
Colour Code either 1 x Grey or 2 x Grey – Part Number 533 411 105.
The shock absorbers on the 16v have a different characteristic and are stiffer -Part Number 533 413 031.
Rear coil springs on the 16v are unchanged.
Colour Code 3 x Yellow – Part Number 531 511 105 A.
The shock absorbers on the 16v have a different characteristic and are stiffer -Part Number 533 513 033.
