single headlamp grille conversion with photos

The purpose of this mod is to do away with the inner spot-lamps on some Scirocco’s which many people (including me) think look too fussy!
Unfortunately its pretty difficult to find original grills to suit or after market ones, hence this mod:
All you need is a MK2 Golf grill, the only stipulation is that it must be a single headlamp grill as you wont get enough length with a twin headlamp grill.
Tools wise you’ll need either a hacksaw or if you want to do it quicker & easier a grinder with a cutting disk on, just go steady with the grinder though as it zips through plastic very quick and the bits that fly off stick to you!
You’ll also need a tape measure, a drill and a marker pen.
Ok so here is the front section of the rocco where we are going to mount the grill:
15
The length of the grill area is approx 33″ & height wise it’s 6.5″. Note also the brackets for the spot lamps, these make as good a place as any to anchor your new grill.
Starting with a MK2 Golf grill then, you need to start by cutting off the headlamp sections at each end:
21
32
When those two sections are removed it leaves you with approx 35″ length so you need to lop off 1″ from each end if you are fitting a badged grill like this one (obviously as badge would end up in wrong place).
You also need to shave off along the top and bottom of the grill as pictured here, this leaves you with approx 6.5″ :

So, In theory you now have a shortened grill measuring approx 33″ in length and 6.5″ in height (the one in the pic still needs a bit of finishing on the top but the grinder popped at the last moment lol:
51
So on with a test fit, this one was a little bit too tight so I shaved a bit more off here and there:
61
You’ll also need to drill some holes in the grill to fit it using the spot lamp bracket holes as the obvious place.
finito:

This is great, thank you! Having pranged the front end of my ‘rocco, I figured I’d go for something a little different when repairing it. Now with your superb instructions, I can do!

    Thanks once again,

    Sam :)
