You can actually buy a piece of ready made glass that you glue into the wiper spindle hole. You should find them on eBay, and various companys that advertise performance parts in PerformanceVW magazine sell them. If I remember rightly they're about £20,quite expensive for a little piece of glass.
Don't ask me....it was like that when i got here !

just use a rubber grommet or something similar, i just used a black threaded cap off a Citroen AX boot, its threaded so theres a washer and a nut on the inside of the glass.

better than having a gaping hole in your rear window though
do you know of anyone who has done this? sounds like it wouldn't look entirely smooth

It's not that big at all.
I've been on the look out for a poverty spec rear glass for years, ever since I de wipered the old Rocco and they are proper "Egay rare". I even went so far as to consider mashing it so I could get one from the RAC but even they can't find them. It seems the best thing to do is to bung it and seal it, you hardly notice it's there.
